Many people have their doubts when they hear about Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing or EMDR. However, this unique and innovative therapy method has proven extremely effective as part of the recovery process for those dealing with trauma or violence. In recent years, EMDR has been utilized in therapy for a wide range of individual goals and specific diagnosis. The knowledgeable clinician and team at Prospering Hope Counseling utilize EMDR on a regular basis to help people neutralize their physical and emotional responses to specific situations in order to allow them the opportunity to develop the coping skills and life strategies necessary to move forward to a safer, more satisfying life.
EMDR is an evidence-based therapy method utilized to help people move beyond traumatic experiences. While traditional talk therapy helps people work through difficult events in their past, it takes time. When you're experiencing extremely painful responses now, hearing that you'll have to wait for relief can make the struggle even more difficult. The great thing about EMDR is that people can start experiencing relief right away.
Like any therapy technique, EMDR isn't the right method for everyone. However, it has been proven beneficial for those who have experienced or witnessed any of the following negative events:
Following distressing events, some people experience minimal negative emotional or physical responses to the past event and current situations that may trigger thoughts of the event. However, these experiences of heightened fear or other emotional responses can stay within a person's mind and body. This can lead to numerous concerns like intrusive circular thinking or repeated thoughts of the event, nightmares or daytime flashbacks, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, rapid mood shifts, being easily startled, and avoiding situations that may remind you of the event. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, EMDR may be right for you.
We begin by discussing the past concerns that lead you to visit our office, present symptoms that are leading to daily difficulties, and what your goals are for the future.
During your sessions, we'll ask that you discuss a triggering event while moving the eyes from side to side or holding buzzers in the hands. These physical sensations will help to ground your body in the present as well as giving you something to focus on outside of the traumatic or painful events we discuss. Over time, this leads to a change in the sensations you experience when remembering a painful event or experiencing a triggering situation in the present. EMDR sessions should be continued until the patient reports no distressing physical or emotional responses to thoughts of past events or current situations that call these events to mind.
