The first visit is primarily an information gathering session. We need to learn a lot about you and your history in a short amount of time in order to identify any difficulties you are currently facing and your goals for seeking treatment. Our main job is to simply listen to you and work together to develop a plan to meet your needs.
Therapy can help people overcome obstacles to their well-being. Each session where you meet with the therapist one on one is considered individual therapy. These sessions provide a safe, caring, and confidential place to explore your feelings, beliefs, or behaviors; work through challenging or influential memories; identify aspects of your life that you would like to change; better understand yourself and others; set personal goals; and work toward desired change.
Family therapy is a form of treatment that is designed to address specific issues affecting the health and functioning of the family. It seeks to reduce distress and conflict by improving the interactions between family members. Family therapy can be helpful on many levels such as developing and maintaining healthy boundaries, fostering cohesion and communication among family members, promoting problem solving, building empathy and understanding, and reducing family conflict.
Marriage counseling is beneficial for any form of an intimate relationship and is designed to treat the relationship as a whole, rather than focusing on one individual. It is the process of counseling the parties of a relationship in an effort to recognize, and to better manage or reconcile, troublesome differences and repeating patterns of stress upon the relationship. Many individuals come away from marriage counseling having gained insight into relational patterns, increased emotional expression, and having developed the skills necessary to communicate and problem solve more effectively.
From time to time we will offer groups targeted to a specific problem such as grief, trauma, depression, anxiety, and a variety of other topics. Group therapy allows people to receive the support and encouragement of the other members of the group. It provides a safe and comfortable place where members can work out problems and emotional issues, gain insight into their own thoughts and behavior, and offer suggestions and support to others.
